The year of death inscribed on Louis's gravestone is incorrect. Louis and his wife, Nannette, were visiting their daughter Ophelia (Mrs. Louis Hausmann) in New Orleans in February 1915: "Mrs. Louis Hausmann has as her guests her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Peine, of Wharton, Texas." (Times-Picayune, New Orleans, La., 21 Feb 1915, sect. 2, page 5, col. 7.) In addition, Louis's 1916 Texas death certificate (no. 5587) reports 1 February 1916 as his date of death. (It also reports 1838, rather than 1837, as his year of birth.)
