Private and later, Corporal, Company H, 7th US Cavalry. Born in Orsle, Denmark, he emigrated to the United States, and on January 15, 1872, he enlisted at age 22, in Chicago, Illinois, into the 7th US Cavalry. He gave his previous occupation as Laborer. He was assigned to Company H, and participated in the Black Hills Expedition in 1874. During the 1876 Sioux Campaign, he fought at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and was wounded in the left thigh during the Reno Hilltop fight. After the battle, he was evacuated on the steamer "Far West" back to Fort Abraham Lincoln, North Dakota, where he recovered from his wounds. He was discharged on January 15, 1877, at Fort Rice, ND, upon expiration of his term of service, as a Corporal of excellent character. He reenlisted the next day for another three years of service. He married Carolina Anderson (born June 18, 1849, in Germany), on October 4, 1891, in Spearfish, SD. She had two children by a previous marriage in Germany, but there were no children from this marriage. They resided near Alladin, Wyoming, and later, near Spearfish, South Dakota, where he left the Army and became a farmer. He received a pension of $50 per month from September 23, 1921, and resided with his stepson, William Nelson, in Deadwood, South Dakota. He died at 7:00 am at the age of 81, in Deadwood, SD; Cause of death was senility and acute indigestion. He was survived by his brother in Belle Fourche, SD, and by his stepson.
