Early Life: Tom was born January 26, 1943, in Wendell, Idaho, to Cedar and Mary Payton. He grew up in Jerome, Idaho, graduating from Jerome High School in 1961. He worked with his father at Volco Builders during those years.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: After attending the University of Idaho for two years, Tom put his schooling on hold to earn money for tuition. In 1966, he enlisted in the United States Army. After a parachute cord caused hearing damage, he became a Corpsman, which included a short stint in Okinawa, Japan, providing support for the war. Tom was honorably discharged and moved to the greater Seattle, Washington, area where he thrived professionally, building custom homes with his partner and longtime friend, Robert Casey.
