DEATH OF MR. SAMUEL BARBER. —
Another old familiar figure in Parramatta has disappeared from the stage of life, Mr. Samuel Barber having joined the great majority. Mr.Barber was 89 years of age when he died, death resulting from a general break-up of the system.

He was born in or near Parramatta, his father being a sergeant in one of the early regiments. In 1831, when the Rev. Samuel Marsden was Colonial Chaplain, the deceased had charge of a primary school at Castle Hill, and some of the older residents of the district taught by him are still in the land of the living.

A few years later, Mr. Barber acted as one of the pioneers in opening up the Murrumbidgee country, in which locality he took up a considerable extent of land, and for many years he was largely engaged in squatting pursuits. He also acquired some exceedingly valuable property in the main thoroughfares of Parramatta, in which town he lived for years. The latter portion of Mr. Barber's life, however, was spent in retirement at Margaret Hall, near Guildford.

Mr. Barber was married three times, and leaves, by the first wife, three sons and two daughters, as also one daughter by the widow ; he also leaves 28 grandchildren, and 10 greatgrandchildren. He was a brother-in-law to the late Hon. James Byrnes, and uncle to Mr. G. T. Hunt, J.P. The funeral took place at St. John's cemetery on Friday afternoon.
