William was the son of James Hotaling and Maldenett Terpening. His siblings include: Charles, Ada, Emma, Garret, James, Oris, and Grover. He married Addie McKillip on 14 or 20 July 1888 (records for both dates) in White County, Indiana. They had one son, James Oris Hotaling. After his son became ill with "Consumption" and Addie and her son moved to Denver for a more healthful climate and William moved home to Ira. However he and Addie remained married until her death and she mentioned her husband in her will.
