William S. Westberry was born in 1840, Hamilton County, Florida. He was the son of Jared Westberry and Nancy A. Bennett. William S. moved with his parents into Hamilton County, Florida, near Jasper, about 1840 from Lowndes County, Georgia. William S. married Martha Hiers Renfro on January 3, 1864 in Jasper, Hamilton County, Florida. Martha was born in 1842 the daughter of Daniel Hiers and Nancy Hunter. William S. and Martha had six children. On March 4, 1862, William S. enlisted at Whitesville, Echols County, Georgia, as a Private in Co. C, 47th Regiment Ga. Infantry. During his service, he was wounded at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on November 25, 1863. He was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital, LaGrange, Georgia, on June 25, 1864, and later transferred to Oliver Hospital on July 5, 1864. During October 1864, William S. was sent home to Hamilton County, Florida on a 60 day furlough. He attempted to reach his command at the close of the war. William S. died of complications from a war injury in Hamilton County, Florida on October 4, 1873. Shortly after the death of her husband, Martha returned with her children to Brooks County, Georgia. The location of his grave in Hamilton Co., Florida has never been located. A memorial headstone was placed at Old Bethel Church in Brooks Co. Georgia during a graveside dedication service on September 24, 1994 .by the John K. McNeill Camp No. 674, Sons of Confederate Veterans. The headstone stands not far from the location where his wife is buried.
