Thelma Marie (Babcock) Nicholas, 86 of Pawnee City, Nebraska passed away on Friday, April 18, 2014 in Lincoln, Nebraska. 


She was born on January 23, 1928 to August and Bertha Alice (Burgett) Babcock in Table Rock, Nebraska.

 

Early on the family moved to Dawson vicinity. Thelma attended kindergarten in Dawson. They moved two miles north and one mile east of Pawnee City and Thelma attended school through the 8th grade in District 16. Her first year of High School she stayed in town during the week. The next year Thelma and her sister Velma walked to the corner and hitched the two mile ride with Croms. Her junior/senior year she stayed in town during the week with sister Lorraine.


She graduated high school in 1946 and on June 1, 1946 she married Lewis L. Nicholas who had completed his naval duties. She was a loving and supporting mother to Wanda Rae, Norma Jean and John Benjamin. 

 

Lewis and Thelma spent the first five years of married life five miles west of Summerfield, Kansas. They moved to Pawnee County and farmed west of Pawnee City until 1979, while also working at the Beatrice State Development Center. They moved to Pawnee City in 1979. 

 

Thelma enjoyed music and playing the violin.She played in a band for local dances. She played the violin until an accident twisted her wrist permanently and was unable to play. 

 

Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis, brothers, Glen, Raymond, Lawrence, sisters, Lorraine and Zelma.

 

Thelma is survived by her children, Wanda and Howard, JB and Candi, Norma and Dale, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and three sisters, all of Pawnee City, Marjorie Clifton, Velma Rowland, Betty Brown.

 

Funeral services 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the Presbyterian church, Pawnee City, Nebraska. Officiating Reverend Ken Tubbesing. 


Visitation Wednesday, April 23, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee City, Nebraska with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. 


Interment at the Pawnee City Cemetery, Pawnee City, Nebraska.
