Carl A. Smith, age 78, a retired Baltimore & Ohio Railroad engineer and a resident of Garrett since 1904, died at 2 a.m. Tuesday in the Butler Hotel rest home.

His death was attributed to complications following a paralytic stroke. He had suffered the stroke last Feb. 29 and for two months had been confined in the rest home.

The body was removed to the Baidinger & Walter funeral home in Garrett where friends may call. At noon Friday the body will be taken to the Presbyterian church in Garrett to lie in state until funeral services are conducted at 2 p.m. Friday.

The Rev. Peter Soudah, pastor of the Garrett Presbyterian church, will officiate at the services with burial to follow in Roselawn cemetery near Auburn.

Mr. Smith was born Aug. 30, 1882 in Seneca county, near Tiffin, 0., son of the late John and Helena Smith.

He came to Garrett Oct. 17, 1904 and accepted employment as a fireman on the B&O.

In a ceremony performed in Auburn July 5, 1906, he married Dora Ethel Barrone who preced him in death Aug. 28, 1946. He married Amelia C. Moening December 7, 1953.

She survives with four daughters, Mrs. Wayne Sherrick, Cleveland, Mrs. Dorothy Brandmo of four miles south of Garrett, Mrs. Cleo Talley of Talley addition, East Garrett, and Mrs. J. Myles Hixson of four miles south of Garrett; two sons, Buford Smith, 506 South Guilford street, Garrett, and Delmer 0. Smith of 511 South Ijams street, Garrett; a brother, Clinton Smith, Tiffin, 0.; one sister, Mrs. Corletta Renniger, also of Tiffin; 18 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mr. Smith was promoted to B&O engineer Oct. 23, 1910 and to passenger engineer in 1935. For nine years preceding his retirement in December, 1950, he was engineer on the Columbian.

He was a member of the Garrett Presbyterian church, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen & Enginemen.
