Funeral services for Jerry M. Burden, 78, a prominent ranchman of Doss community, were held on Thursday, Jan. 7, 1965 2 pm in the Beckman Funeral Home : Burden died on Wednesday, Jan 6 th at 12:40 a m in the Legion hospital, Kerrville, where he had been a patient over an extended period. He was a native of Cobbstown, Georgia, where he was born on March 24. 1886, the son of James S Durden and Saran Elizabeth Coleman Durden. He married Sophie Siefert, his surviving widow, on Sent. 7. 1917 in St. John Lutheran Church, San Antonio. Durden served in the armed forces during World War I, and was one of the first to go to France with General Pershing. He served as president of the Hill Country Telephone Cooperative, and resigned because of ill health. He was a great sportsman and active in school affairs. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children: Sarah, Mrs. Otto F. Wiltrout, Fredericksburg; and Jerry M. Durden jr of Comfort. Also surviving are a brother, Rufus Durden, a sister, Miss Frances Durden, both of Uvalde, Georgia; . and a sister - in - law, Mrs. Daisy Durden, Atlanta. Ga. He was preceded in death by four brothers: . Alfred Durden, Harley Durden. Luther Durden and Leonard Durden. j The Rev. Clarence C. Ehler, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Kerrville, officiated in the rites. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery.
