Lorene Lay Hembree (71), of Harrodsburg, beloved wife of 53 years of Art Hembree, passed away on April 13, 2014 at home surrounded by her family. Born on August 9, 1942 in Knox County, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Lay.

She was retired from Harrodsburg City Hall and a member of Salvisa Baptist Church and prior to that served more than 20 years as a member of Burgin Baptist Church. Lorene was a tireless fundraiser and event organizer to benefit the America Cancer Society and spent much of the last decade serving as a support system for others with breast cancer.

Lorene is survived by her daughter Trina (Jeff) Sheets of Lexington; son Kirk Hembree of Harrodsburg; and grandsons Tyler Hembree and Neal Wells of Lawrenceburg. She is also survived by her sister Irene (Clifford) Payne of Somerset; and brothers Kenneth and Delphus Lay of Barbourville.

She was preceded in death by brother J.D. Lay of Knox County.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Salvisa Baptist Church with visitation from 9:00-11:00 A.M. Wednesday morning. Dr. Jason Clark is officiating the funeral service. Burial will be in the Springhill Cemetery with Rev. Danny Hembree officiating. Brian Hembree, Chris Hembree, Chris Lay, Greg Lay, Gary Miles, and Randy Payne will servie as pallbearers.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 from 5:00 P.M. -8:00 P.M. at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home in Harrodsburg.
