using numbers to help in identifying who is who with same names. Most of this is guesswork based on ages and naming patterns but hopefully someone out there can help in figuring this out.
believe this Stephen (b 1784, we'll call him Stephen1 for identification purposes) was a son of Elisha1 (once again for identification purposes).
I believe that Stephen1 was either an uncle or brother (more likely in my opinion) to Elisha2 who was born in 1798 in NC.
We find Stephen1 on the 1800 census in Ashe county NC. He is listed in the 26-45 age catagory with what assume is a wife and one male child age 0-10.
By 1810 we find an S.Baldwin (probably Stephen1) on the Ashe county census aged 45+ with 2 male and 3 female children in the 0-10 age catagory and 1 male child in the 10-16 catagory.
We also see that Stephen1 had a son Jacob3 tying in more to the rest of the clan.
Assuming Elisha1 is the father of Stephen1 we can guess that it is probably Stephen1's father Elisha1 we find on the 1800 Ashe county census as well. He would be the male aged 45+ but he does have several other children in the home with him including 3 males aged 0-10. One of these males could well be Elisha2 making him the brother of Stephen1.
Elisha2 had 2 sons, Jacob2 (b. 1822) and Stephen3 (b. 1829) Both of whom went to SW VA along with Elisha2 who we find in 1850 in Russell county VA.
I believe this is the Elisha Baldwin found on the 1820 Ashe county census with wife and sons. Next door to him was a Jacob Baldwin (Jacob1) age 26-45.
This could well be another of Elisha1's sons that are listed in the 0-10 age group on the 1800 Ashe county census making Jacob1 a brother to Stephen1 and Elisha2.
Jacob2 had several sons including Elisha3 b.1854 and Stephen4 b. 1848
Stephen3 had several sons including Elisha4 b.1853 among others.
There is also a William in the 1800 census and both Stephen3 and Jacob2 had sons named William.
Based on on all these similarities in names and such I would have to believe these are all from one branch and I would love to hear insights or help on this very confusing bunch of Baldwins.
