OBITUARY: Virgil Arthur Dies in Pekin, Illinois - Rites Held At Liberty Church

Funeral rites were held Friday afternoon at Liberty Christian Church for Virgil Arthur, of Pekin, Illinois, who died suddenly from a heart attach at Pekin Wednesday. Mr. Arthur, who was a half-brother of Albert Atkins, Medora; Robert Arthur, Norman and Mrs. Ida Mae Edwards, Medora, was born in Lawrence county on May 7, 1899, a son of the late Joseph and Eunice Allen Arthur. He was married on December 20, 1919, to Katie (Catherine/Kathern) G. Baker, deceased. Surviving in addition to the three Jackson county relatives are a brother Herschel Arthur, living in Pekin, Illinois; another half-brother Will Arthur, of Indianapolis; and another half-sister, Mrs. Anna Mickels of Indianapolis. Mr. Arthur was a steel worker. Harold Barnett, pastor of the Christian Church at Austin and former pastor of Wray's Christian Church, was in charge of the funeral. Burial was in Liberty Cemetery.

In the 1930 Federal census, Virgil Arthur, age 29, was working as a driver with a trucking company, living in Pekin, Illinois, and was married to Irene G. Arthur, age 22. She and her parents were all born in Indiana - Irene about 1908, and may have married in 1928/1929. In the 1940 Federal census, Virgil Arthur, age 41, and Irene Arthur, age 31, were living in Sand Prairie, Illinois. He was a truck driver working for American Distillery. Irene Arthur was working as a system boss for American Distillery. She was possibly born in 1909 in Illinois and completed four years of high school. In the 1950 Federal census, Virgil Arthur, age 49, was an iron worker in building construction. Gladys Arthur was age 44, born in Illinois about 1906. Virgil and Gladys Arthur were living in Peoria, Illinois.

Note: There is a "marriage coupon" from the County of Baxter, Arkansas, which cited that Virgil Arthur, age 46, a resident of Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois; and Mrs. Gladys Whitten, age 40, a resident of Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois, were married on October 6, 1946, with a minister (not named) officiating. The coupon was signed by JD Alley, County Clerk. City directories for Pekin, Illinois for 1943 and 1946 listed Gladys Whitten, driver for Pekin Cab. In 1943, she was living at 105 Sapp, Pekin, Illinois; in 1946, she was living at 317 1/2 Court, Pekin, Illinois. In the 1948 city directory, there is no Virgil or Gladys Arthur listed.
