FRED H. BURNS

Fred H. Burns, 87, of Elyria passed away Monday April 7, 2014, at the home of his daughter in Sullivan, following a three month illness. He was born in Raymond, Arkansas and resided in Elyria since 1984, moving from Cleveland.

Mr. Burns served in the U.S. Navy during WW II on the USS Porterfield DD 682. He was awarded the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with 8 stars, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 stars.

He worked 30 years for GM Chevy Parma Plant, retiring in 1985. He was a member of UAW Local 105. He enjoyed gardening and was active with Island Road Freewill Baptist Church, where he volunteered as a Sunday School Teacher.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Rose (nee Nelson); two sons, Nathan (Molly) of Elyria, Curtis (Jackie) Burns of North Ridgeville; two daughters, Marilyn (Vernon) Thompson of Sullivan, Cynthia (Don) Michaels of Painsville; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; and one sister, Christine (John) Manning of Hot Springs, Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred L. Burns, Effie Rimmer; son, Richard; three infant children; three brothers; and one sister.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 10, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M., at Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville, where services will be held 11 A.M. Friday, April 11, 2014. Reverend Ed Kennedy, Sr. and Reverend Earl Coleman will co-officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon. The VFW Post 9871 will conduct full military honors.
