Dale Miller, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Memphis under the direction of Peppers Family Funeral Home in Memphis, TX.
Mr. Bowman, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014 in Amarillo, TX.
Mr. Glen Dair Bowman was born August 6, 1923, to the late Mr. Carl B. Bowman and Mrs. Quay Virginia (Bruce) Bowman in Hulver, TX. He attended elementary school in Hulver and attended high school in Estelline.
Glen married Georgia Nichols on January 18, 1950 in Childress, TX. He served in the United States Army. He retired from the Ft Worth and Denver Railroad. He also worked as a farmer. Glen was a member of the Church of Christ in Memphis, TX.
The following is a letter from Lt. Col. Robert E. O'Brien Jr. on March 7, 1945:
"It is a pleasure and a privilege to send you the enclosed citation which your son received when he was awarded the Bronze Star." The citation reads, Sergeant Gen D. Bowman 38342655, 38th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), United States Arm. For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an armed enemy on 7 March 1945, near Vischel, Germany. As his platoon closed on the center of a German town, Sergeant Bowman, a tank commander, noticed an enemy machine gun firing from the far end of the village. Realizing that this gun would caused considerable causalities if not neutralized at once, Sergeant Bowman ordered his squad to dismount and to follow him under cover. He manned the anti-aircraft gun on his tank and launched a daring attack against the position. Although the enemy was heavily armed with Panze –fausts, thou speed and boldness of Sergeant Bowman's attack did not allow fire to be delivered upon his tank. He over-ran and killed the enemy machine runner after which he directed his driver inside a country yard to force the remainder of the enemy to surrender. The continued fire of his machine gun forced the enemy to flee into the street where they were captured by the dismounted men of his squad. The heroic action of Sergeant Bowman vitally assisted the remainder of his platoon in the successful attack on the town. Such action reflects great credit upon Sergeant Bowman and upon the United States Army.
Glen is preceded in death by his wife, Georgia May Bowman on January 11, 2012, sister, Del Ray House, brother, C.B. (Buster) Bowman.
Mr. Bowman is survived by his two sons, Billy Bowman of Le Fors, TX, Thomas Tippett and wife, Sonia of Memphis, TX; 2 daughters, Linda Huddleston of Memphis, TX, and Debbie Wiles and husband, Gerald of Memphis, TX; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren, a twin sister, May Fair Barnet of Albuquerque, NM;
