Mrs. Layfield was the former Essie Okel Dawson, and was born February 22, 1899, daughter of the late I.P. and Martha Dawson, in Elizabeth. She lived in Elizabeth until after the death of her mother in 1926. She had resided in Mansfield since 1944.
Mrs. Layfield was a retired employee of the Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co., and was a member of the Lincoln Heights Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, Ervin Duane Layfield, with whom she made her home; three grandchildren; two brothers, Arza Dawson of Parkersburg, and the Rev. Eddie U. Dawson, of French Creek, W.Va.; and one sister, Mrs. John D. Tennant, of Fairview.
Funeral services were conducted at the Wappner Funeral Home in Mansfield Monday afternoon, Dec. 29, by the Rev. Wesley Arnold. Burial was in the Mansfield Memorial Park.
