Darrel Dee (Papaw) Adams, 82, of Hickory, NC, went home to Glory on Friday, June 11, 2010 from Frye Regional Medical Center. Born January 13, 1928 in Alexandria, IN, he was the son of the late Clarence Adams and Etta Mae Gaither Adams.

He served in the US Navy from 1948 to 1953 and then several years in the reserve. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, loved the Lord and his family. Darrel retired from Guide Lamp (GM) in February, 1988. He then camped and traveled for several years before moving to Hickory.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sons, Allen Lee Adams, David S. Adams and a sister, Sharlene Adams Gipe.

Mr. Adams is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Gilliam Adams of the home; daughters, Beverly (Adams) Peterson and husband Dr. Thomas M. Peterson, and Pamela JoAnn Rockwell of Hickory; grandsons, David Allen Adams and wife Tracey of Wellington, FL, Luke Adams Peterson and granddaughter, Lacy C. Peterson of Hickory; sisters, Maxine Adams Gardner and husband Jack and Mary Sue Adams Foster of Alexandria, IN; 3 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held June 14, 2010 in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Hickory. Friends and family can pay their respect from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm with the service to follow.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family are asked to consider a memorial contribution in Darrel's name to Hickory Christian Academy, 3260 6th St. Dr. NW, Hickory, NC 28601
