She married Thomas June 26, 1826 at her father's home in King and Queen County Virginia. They lived at"Elmington" in Virginia until 1835 when they moved south to Hinds County, Mississippi.

Her daughter, Susan D Dabney, born 1840, was engaged to Lyell Smedes for 2 years. With the glowing approval of her parents, they were married in a large wedding at Burleigh Plantation in October 1860. Shortly after that, Susan's mother Sophia died very suddenly. Eleven weeks after the marriage, Lyell died. He is buried next to Sophia.

Susan Dabney Smedes did not remarry. She published her book,"Memorials of a Southern Planter" in 1887. This was written to memorialize her father and his affectionate care for his servants, even through his impoverishment of later years. She wished to capture the example of his life for his grandchildren and subsequent descendants. Following the publication, she lived in the West with her sister, then in Washington, D.C. She traveled in Europe and then settled in Sewannee, Tennessee, where she died July 4, 1913. I have no burial site.SSS
