Mrs. Maude Appleby

Mrs. Maude Appleby, 80, life-long Delaware county resident and Manchester resident for the past 21 years, passed away Friday morning at the Delaware County Memorial hospital in Manchester following a long period of failing health.

Funeral services for Mrs. Appleby were held at the Shelly Funeral Home at 1:30pm Monday, with the Rev. James J. Stroh officiating. Burial was made in Oakland Cemetery.

Maude Myrtle, daughter of Albert and Eva Bryan Sheppard, was born February 19, 1890, on the parental farm near Hopkinton. She grew to young womanhood on the farm and received her education in the rural schools of Delaware county and in the schools of Hopkinton. After the death of her father in 1900, she moved into Hopkinton with her mother and the other members of the family and she completed her schooling in the Hopkinton schools and graduated from the Hopkinton high school. Following her graduation she taught in the rural schools in the Buck Creek area for about four years.

She was united in marriage with Walter J. Appleby on March 6, 1912, and they farmed in the Buck Creek area for several years and then moved to a farm in the Delhi area where they lived until 1939. From 1939 until 1949 they farmed in the Manchester area and then retired and moved into Manchester.

Mrs. Appleby is survived by two sons, Donald W. Appleby and Harlan H. Appleby, both of Manchester; six grandsons; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Hahn of Manchester and Mrs. Vesta Boots of Hopkinton, and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband on September 29, 1959, by her parents and by one brother.
