Donald W. Appleby, 90, of Manchester, Iowa, died Thursday morning, October 7, 2004, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 10, 2004, at the Community Congregation Church, Manchester, with Rev. Kurt Pasko officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Saturday at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral and Cremation Service, Manchester, and for one hour before service on Sunday at the church. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Manchester, with military honors.

Donald was born June 1, 1914, the son of Walter J. & Maude M. (Sheppard) Appleby near Buck Creek, Iowa. He graduated from Delhi High School in 1932. Donald attended Lenox College for two years. In 1934, Don went to work for Lynch Transfer and Storage in Cedar Rapids. On June 8, 1938 he was united in marriage to Alleda Ruth Taylor at the St. James Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They moved to Waterloo in 1941 where he drove truck for Takin Brothers Moving and Storage. Donald was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1944 where he worked as an electrician on the destroyer, U.S.S. Mansfield. In May 1945, he was honorably discharged from the service and moved to Manchester, Iowa. Donald and his brother-in-law Millard "Mick" Allen owned and operated Allen and Appleby Electric Company for 37 years. In 1980 they sold the business and retired. Donald and Ruth began spending their winters in Mission, Texas.

Don was a member of Community Congregational United Church of Christ where he served as deacon and sang in the church choir. He was a member and past-president of the Manchester Rotary Club. Donald was a member of the American Legion of Manchester, Iowa where he played Taps for funerals. He was also a member of Gideons International. Don's hobbies included woodworking and photography, and even had his own dark room in their home. He played the violin and cornet in high school. Don and Ruth enjoyed fishing and traveling together. The couple moved to the Good Neighbor Home in 1999.

Donald is survived by his wife, A. Ruth Appleby of Manchester; five sons, David (Helen) of Cincinnati, Ohio, William D. "Bill" (Linda) of Des Moines, Iowa, Michael "Mitch" (Leslie) of Dubuque, Richard "Rick" of Manchester and James W. (Mary) of Newton, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and one brother, Harlan (LaVerne) Appleby of Arthur, Illinois.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Walter J. & Maude M. Appleby.
