Nellie was the daughter of Frederick Haschel and Maria J. Eikelberner or Auckerbaum (I found both), who married circa 1871. Frederick was born in Germany.

Nellie first appeared with her family on the 1880 Census, living in Tippecanoe, Pulaski County, Indiana, where her father Frederick, aged 33, was farming for a living. Maria, aged 27, was home with their four children--Daniel, aged 8, Ida, aged 6, Alice, aged 3, and Nellie, aged 1.

Without that 1890 Census, I wasn't able to check back in with the family until 1900. There appear to have been some major events. They were still living in Tippecanoe, Pulaski County, and Frederick, aged 53 was busy with the farm. Maria, who would have been about 47, was conspicuosly absent. There in her place was a spouse named Mary, aged 38. She reported that she had only had four children, and that all four were still living. At home with her were five children--Nellie, aged 21, who wasn't her child, and Freddie, aged 19, Edith, aged 13, Dessie, aged 10, and Willie, aged 8, who were likely hers. Making it confusing was that all were noted with the Haschel surname. Not there were Nellie's three older siblings Daniel, Ida, and Alice. Daniel had married Amanda Reinholt on 24 Nov 1892, Ida had married William Fritz on 1 Jan 1893, and Alice had married Lewis Prechtel on 6 Dec 1896, all three marriages taking place in Pulaski County.

I found a marriage record for a Germany-born Frederick Haschel to a Mary C. Clark on 25 Nov 1896. As all of the children with them in 1900 were born prior to that date, the four children Mary refered to must have been children from a previous marriage. In 1910, she would report that she had had five children and that four were still living. That record confirmed that she indeed had been married before. As for that fifth chile, there's no reason why she couldn't have had a fifth child when she was 38 or even older.

The year after that 1900 Census, Nellie married Robert H. Meeks on 1 Feb 1901 in Pulaski County. They do not appear to have had any children together. Six years later, she married Claude Hoke on 2 Feb 1907 in Pulaski County. Claude and Nellie welcomed the first of their four children, daughter Doris Madye. I found the three of them together on the 1910 Census, living in White Post, Pulaski County, Indiana, where Claude, aged 24, was farming for a living. Nellie, aged 30, reported that she had only had one child. Indeed, home with her was 1-year-old Doris.

The year 1914 would have been a mix of sadness and joy for Claude. His father Frank died on 11 May 1914 at age 72, and Claude and Nellie welcomed son Francis Marion to the family in 1914. Sadly, death claimed daughter Doris on 16 Aug 1916 at age seven.

Perhaps the arrival of daughter Nellie Jr. that same year brought this family a measure of joy. Claude and Nellie's son Ralph joined the family in 1918. On his 1918 WWI registration card, Claude reported that he was of medium height and build, and that he had gray eyes and brown hair.

Claude must have been struggling with some sort of mental illness. By the 1920 Census, he was a patient at Longcliff Hospital, the Northern Indiana Hospital for the Insane, now known as Logansport State Hospital, located in Cass County, Indiana. Claude was designated as married. Wife Nellie and their three children had moved in with Nellie's niece Ruth in West Township, Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana. Ruth was the daughter of Claude's older sister Mary Grace. Ruth had married Lloyd Abair and they had two children with them--Sherley, aged 5, and Virginia, just shy of being 2 years old. Nellie, aged 40, was designated as a boarder instead of an aunt. With her were (Francis) Marion, aged 3, Nellie Jr., aged 3, and Ralph, the exact same age as Ruth's 1-year-8-month-old daughter Virginia.

Claude died four years after that census in 1924 at age 49. Nellie eventually remarried after his death, saying "I do" for the third time to Peter Zumbaugh sometime between 1925 and 1930. It was a second marriage for Peter, who had previously married Mertie Viola Cook on 22 Mar 1893, and had at least two children with her--Hildred G. (b.1903), and Elton J.G. (b. 1908).

I found Nellie and Peter on the 1930 Census, living in Plymouth's West Township, where Peter, aged 62, was busy farming. Nellie Sr., aged 50, was keeping house. Still at home with their mother and step-father were Marion, aged 16, Nellie, aged 14, and Ralph, aged 12.

In 1940, Nellie and Peter were still living in Plymouth. Peter, aged 72 by then, was doing odd jobs. Nellie, aged 60, was keeping house. Their nest was empty by then. I couldn't find marriage records for them but Marion appears to have married Genevieve May Backus.

Nellie lived until age 73, dying in 1952. She was laid to rest next to Claude.
