Emma was the youngest child of Talliafaro Downing and Mary Shoup, who married on 26 Jun 1842 in Fulton County, Indiana. I found four siblings for her--Austin (b.1843), Helen Jane (b.1 Jan 1848 - d. 28 Aug 1849), Mary Frances "Fanny" (b.1850), and John (b.8 Dec 1852-d.3 Feb 1853). I found Emma's parents and siblings on the 1850 Census, living in Tippecanoe, Pulaski, Indiana, where Talliafaro, enumerated as Talliford, aged 30, was farming for a living. Mary, aged 25, was home with their two children--Austin, aged 7, and Fanny, aged 3 months.

Emma first appeared with her family on the 1860 Census. The family was still living in Tippecanoe, near Winamac. Talliafaro, enumerated this time as Tabafaro, aged 39, was still busy farming. Mary, aged 35, was at home with their three children--Austin, aged 17, Fanny, aged 10, and Emma, aged 5.

Talliafaro and Mary's nest began to empty during the decade that followed. I found two marriage records for an Austin Downing, one to Rachel Meridith on 25 Nov 1866 in Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana, and a second on 30 May 1869 to Pheobe McElrath in Marshall County, Indiana. Fanny married Francis M. Hoke on 25 Jan 1868 in Pulaski County, Indiana.

In 1870, 15-year-old Emma was still at home with her parents. They were still living in Tippecanoe, Pulaski County. Talliafaro, aged 50, was still working the farm. Mary, aged 45, was keeping house. Also living with them was daughter Fanny, aged 20, Fanny's husband Frank, aged 28, and their daughter May, aged 1. And though it doesn't say so on the record, Frank was likely helping on the farm.

Tragedy struck on 2 Feb 1871 when Fanny and Emma were returning home after attending a spelling school near Monterey. They were riding astride the same horse which, after being frightened, threw Fanny off. As she fell, her foot got caught in the stirrup and she was dragged quite a distance, resulting in her death. Emma was not injured.

Frank, all alone with a daughter a year and nine months old, must have been devastated. He found love again where he likely least expected to, marrying Emma on 11 Jan 1872 in Pulaski County, Indiana.

Emma took on the care of her sister's little girl, and three years later, welcomed the first of her seven children with Frank. Those children were Mary Grace, born on 15 Jun 1875, son Alvah M., born on 24 Apr 1876 who sadly died eight months later a week before Christmas on 18 Dec 1876, Nellie, born on 10 Mar 1878 who died a little over a month later on 21 Apr 1878, William, born in 1879, Ira, born on 2 Aug 1882, Claude Alfred, born on 5 Jul 1885, and Bessie, born in November of 1887.

I found the family on the 1880 Census, living in Center Township, Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana, where Frank, aged 38, was busy farming. Emma, aged 25, was home with the children--May, aged 11, Mary Grace, aged 4, and little William, aged 1.

Because the 1890 Census was destroyed in a fire, I wasn't able to check up on the family that year. On 8 Oct 1893, Francis and Emma's daughter Mary Grace married Joseph Harry Wilson in Argos, Marshall County. Their daughter Ruth arrived in September of 1894, followed by Dollie Margaret in March of 1897 and Gladys E. on 6 Feb 1900. Sadly, Mary Grace died later that same year on 14 Sep 1900 at age 25, leaving behind her three young children. Four years earlier, the family had to endure the death of Frank's daughter May with first-wife Fanny on 14 Mar 1896. She was only 26 years old.

By that same 1900 Census, Frank and Emma had moved back to Tippecanoe in Pulaski County. Frank, aged 58, was still busy farming. Emma, aged 45, reported that she had had seven children, but that only five had survived to that census, acknowledgement of the loss of Alvah and Nellie. She had not yet had to endure Mary Grace's death which happened a few months later. Still home with Emma were Ira, aged 17, Claude, aged 14, and Bessie, aged 12. Son William was out on his own and on 30 Dec 1908, he would marry Edna C. Geik in St. Joseph County, Indiana.

Fast forward ten years to the next census in 1910. Frank and Emma had moved back to Plymouth's Center Township in Marshall County and had a farm on the Maxinkuckee road. Frank, aged 68, was still actively engaged in truck farming. Emma, aged 56, reported that only four of her seven children had survived to that census, a painful reminder of Mary Grace's death in 1900. With them was 15-year-old granddaughter Ruth, Mary Grace's oldest child. Ruth's father Joseph remarried circa 1908 and he and second-wife Susanne had moved to Edwards, Wichita, Kansas with Ruth's two sisters Dollie, aged 13, and Gladys, aged 10. Ruth also had a half-sister by then--little Mildred, aged 1. Frank and Emma's son Ira had married Frances Edna Thomas on 14 Jul 1909, and son Claude had married Nellie Meeks on 2 Feb 1907 in Pulaski County. Daughter Bessie had married Merrill Orr on 2 Jul 1906 in Berrien County, Michigan.

Four years after that 1910 Census, Frank died on 11 May 1914 at age 72.

I couldn't find Emma in 1920. I know she wasn't with Ira, Claude or Bessie. She departed this earth on 16 Apr 1927. She was 72 years old, the same age as Frank when he passed.
