King of Hungary, Croatia, and Dalmatia. Born the son of Geza II and his wife Euphrosina of Kiev. He succeeded his father in 1162 but his reign was contested by his paternal uncles Stephen and Ladislaus that were supported by thy Byzantine emperor Manuel I. The elder Stephen was able to defeat the younger, but Ladislaus was crowned instead. He reigned for less than six months and was succeeded by his brother Stephen IV. The new king immediately started a war against Constantinople and his nephew Stephen III. With the support of Friedrich Barbarossa, Stephen III was able to defeat his uncle who was poisoned by his own men in 1165. He continued the war against the Byzantine Empire for two more years. He was then defeated in the Battle of Sirmuim and signed a Peace Treaty with Manuel I. His two children from his marriage to Agnes of Austria both died young.
