LaVada Wilson Batterman, 99, longtime Hereford resident died Sunday, April 6, 2014 at the Hereford Nursing & Rehab center.

A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 2:00 pm, Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Avenue Baptist Church. Rev. Billy Joe Wall, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Rest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Hereford Heritage Funeral Home.

LaVada was born January 23, 1915 in Coalgate, Oklahoma, to Andrew and Cora (Cornelius) Breshears. She married Andrew S. Batterman on September 25, 1933 in Watonga, Oklahoma. They moved to Hereford in 1948 from Nebraska. LaVada was a homemaker and raised a loving family. Her favorite past time was canning. They always had a big garden from which many enjoyed the vegetables. The family always enjoyed the fruits and vegetables throughout the winter months. She loved to sew, and crochet. We were fortunate enough to have her sew our clothes. Our clothes were envied by the other kids in school. She crocheted the most beautiful doilies, table clothes, and afghans.

They will be treasured by us forever. While attending Avenue Baptist Church, she assisted in caring for the babies in the nursery. To many she was known as Mama B.

While working at K-Bobs, Vada, was fortunate enough to meet many people, some famous such as Art Linkletter, Reba Macintyre, and Chuck Connor, to name a few. In 1986, LaVada quit work to care for her husband Andrew, whom was diagnosed with cancer. She lovingly cared for him until his death in 1988.

She will always be remembered for her love and unselfishness to her children.

LaVada was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; Andrew S. Batterman in 1988, 4 sisters; 5 brothers; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Survivors include 3 daughters; Juanita Plunk and husband Jimmy of Little Elm, TX, Linda Phillips and husband Ralph of Amarillo, TX, Sandra Stotts and husband Bob of Ponca City, OK; 3 sons, Fred Batterman and wife Betty of Dimmitt, TX, Bob Batterman and wife Ruby of Ogallala, NE, Gene Batterman and wife Helmie of Hereford, TX; 1 sister, Jewell Batterman of Mustang, OK, 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to a Charity of your choice.
