Mrs. Herman Maertz, 77, nee Matilda Birkholz, died last night at the family home on a farm in Maple Grove, two miles north of Reedsville, following a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from the Maertz home and at 2:30 from the SS John-James Evangelical Lutheran church in Reedsville. The Rev. Harold Eckert will officiate.
Mrs. Maertz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Birkholz, was born in Germany in 1862. When she was a child her parents came to this country and located on a farm north of Reedsville. In 1881 she was married to Mr. Maertz, and they located on the present farm. Nine children were born to them, all of whom reside at or near the homestead. For years
Mr. Maertz operated a threshing machine in the vicinity of Reedsville.
Eight years ago Mr. and Mrs. Maertz observed their golden wedding and five years later celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
Survivors are the widower; three daughters, Mrs. Albert Fokett, Mrs. Ernst Siebert, Mrs. John Treichel, all of Reedsville; six sons, Albert, Henry, Louis, John, Bernard and Erwin, all of Reedsville; sister, Mrs. Otto O. Krueger of Reedsville; 15 grandchildren and five great-grand-
children.
The body will be moved from the Shimon undertaking parlor in Reedsville to the Maertz home Friday noon.
