Anton E. "Tony" Zinkel, age 83, of 3211 Tannery Road, Two Rivers, died on Saturday night, Oct. 6, 2007, at the Hamilton Memorial Home, Two Rivers, after a long, 21-month, courageous battle with cancer.

Tony was born on Dec. 25, 1923, in the town of Newton, a son of the late Edward and Emma (Roberts) Zinkel. He attended the Holy Family Parochial School, in Alverno, and later earned his high school diploma at Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. Tony was drafted into the U.S. Navy on July 1, 1944, and served his country aboard the USS Kemper. He saw action in the South Pacific, and by the end of the war, was stationed near Hong Kong. He was honorably discharged from service, on April 19, 1946. Tony married the former Joyce Becker, on June 28, 1947, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Two Rivers. The couple proudly celebrated
their 60th wedding anniversary this past summer. After earning his high school diploma, he was able to enroll in a plumbing apprenticeship program. With continued dedication to his trade, he eventually received his Master Plumbing
and Building Certification. In the early 1960s, he reached the point where he was able to open his own shop. Zinkel Plumbing and Heating was born, and continued to thrive under his guidance until his retirement in 1992. Even after retirement, and while fighting through his disease, he continued to accept small jobs from loyal customers. Tony was also a leader in the community, as well as within his profession. He was a member of the Two Rivers Lions Club since 1965, and just this past year was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellow award from the Lions International Foundation. He served as president of the local Lions Club in 1985, and was also past president at the state level as well. In the same year, (1985), he was the acting state president for the Wisconsin Plumbers & Heating Assoc. He was a very active member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, where he served as an usher, volunteered many hours with the grounds committee, and was a member of the Men of St. Peter the Fisherman. He was also a longtime member of the Two Rivers Elks Lodge 1380. Some of his hobbies included playing dartball, fishing, dancing, and playing cards. Sheepshead was a favorite, which continued until the end.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Margaret Trainor, and Gertrude Kohlbeck; and a step sister: Myrtle Sprang.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, Two Rivers. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. William G. O'Brien, with burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. Military graveside rites will be accorded by members of the VFW and American Legion Posts of Two Rivers.

Friends may call at the Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, 1506 18th St. Two Rivers, from 5 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening. A parish prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m., led by Father Bill.

Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. on Thursday at the church, until the time of Mass at 10:30 a.m. Members of the Two Rivers Lions Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening, at the funeral home, to pay their respects as a group.

A memorial fund has been established in Tony's name.

The Zinkel family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. (private), and the nurses at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic, and the entire staff of the Hamilton Memorial Home, for their compassionate care and kindness shown to Tony throughout his illness.
