James was one of five sons and 7 daughters born to John and Magdalena Andrew Allen. Three of his brothers moved west to a town near London, Ontario but James stayed in Sutton. He was listed as a laborer and living with his mother in the 1851 census. John Allen, James' father was living with his family north of the border from Alburgh, VT waiting for land he and others had petitioned for in Sutton. He received the grant in 1802. Depending on when he actually moved there would determine where James was born. Some of the older children have said they were born in New York.
