Ed Palmer was born in Kansas in 1905 but moved, shortly after his birth, with his parents Oliver Clyde and Edna Hunt Palmer to Esmond, Benson County, North Dakota. While there they farmed and added two more children to their family a daughter Edith (Edythe) Margaret Palmer and a son Glen Oliver Palmer. His mother Edna died in 1914 and their father moved the entire family to Oberon where he became a barber.
Ed Palmer met Florence Cecelia Lau at the Farmer's Union Central Exchange in St. Paul, MN. They were married in St. Paul about 1929 and later moved to Ellsworth, WI where he was a station manager and owned the delivery truck fleet for a milk cooperative. In the spring of 1941, they bought the Adam Huber farm outside Ellsworth, WI. Florence kept the farm running while he worked the delivery fleet. He spent much time remodeling the farmhouse, upgrading it to electricity and installing bathrooms.
While he and Florence had no children of their own, they raised Florence's niece Gail and during the summers, Gail's brothers John and Jerry, came to work on the farm. Ed was an amazing man with many skills in mechanics, electricity, airplane piloting, farming, running businesses, auto and truck repair, carpentry and animal husbandry. This was the time of the rural electrification projects around 1939 and the nephews learned first-hand from Ed the importance of bringing this much needed resource to the farms of America.
Ed was a private pilot, owned an early model Aeronca plane, which he used with the Civil Air Patrol. In 1953 after nearly 30 years of marriage, Ed left Florence and moved to Minneapolis where he died three years later. His body was returned to his childhood home in Oberon, Benson County, North Dakota. He was only 51 at the time of his death but had lived a full and productive life.
