Garner was the grandson of Daniel and Lavina Kilmer. Garner's parents were Daniel's son, William, and his wife, Margaret "Ellen" Felton.

Garner W. Kilmer, 66, of 405 Alameda avenue, died suddenly at 5:59 o'clock yesterday afternoon in a restaurant at Saratoga. He was the proprietor of the Wurlitzer Machine Company here. He was a member of the Blountsville Christian Church.
Surviving are the widow, Ora; one son, Victor Kilmer, of Muncie; one brother, Charles Kilmer, of near Mt. Pleasant; three sisters, Mrs. Reba Huffman and Mrs. Bessie Reese, both of Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. Susie Wasson of Ohio. The body was brought to the Parson mortuary.
