He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 10th Armored Division in the European campaign. After his service in the Army, he returned to Clemson A&M College (now Clemson University) and graduated with a degree in architecture. He practiced residential and commercial architecture in both Florence and Columbia.
Mr. Lewis was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church, the American Legion Richland Post #6, the 10th Armored Division Veterans Association, and Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. He was also a member of Past, Present & Future Neighborhood Dinner Group and a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Florence. He held positions of leadership in these and other community organizations. He was an active genealogist, maintaining the family tree for years for descendants of William (1740-1811) and Morning Van Pelt (1740-1817) Lewis .
Surviving are two daughters, Jane Allen and husband, Sterling, of Anderson, Lynn Grimes and husband, George, of Blythewood; a son, Rufus D. Lewis, III and wife, Sylvia, of Columbia. In addition, he is survived by five grandchildren, Ryan Allen and wife, Lauren, Lindsay Metcalf and husband, Burgess, Laura Allen, George "Bert" Grimes Jr. and wife, Robin, William "Billy" Grimes and wife, Rae-Ann; four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Lewis of Spartanburg.
Memorials may be made to Shandon United Methodist Church, 3407 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205; Thornwell Home and School for Children, P.O. Box 60, Clinton, SC 29325; or a charity of one's choice.
A family graveside service will be held followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011, at Shandon United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
