Gabriel R. Penelton, 55 years old, died Monday at his home, 232 W. Union St.
A lifelong resident of Edwardsville, Mr. Penelton was the son of the late Gabriel and Birdie Johnson Penelton. He was born April 24, 1911.
Surviving are his wife, the former Clara Lewis, whom he married March 3, 1932 in Edwardsville; two sons, Melvin of Edwardsville and Ronald of Alton; four daughters, Virginia Chenault, Gloria Hayes, Carrie Penelton and Karen Penelton, all of Indianapolis, Ind.; and two grandchildren.
Also surviving are six sisters, Mrs. Fannie Ward, Mrs. Mildred Ward, Mrs. Dora Scott, Mrs. Willie Mae Comer and Mrs. Dymple Mitchell, all of Edwardsville, and Mrs. Flavia Weatherspoon of Zanesville, Ohio. Two brothers are deceased.
He was a member of Wesley Chapel AME Church.
Friends may call at Pletcher Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Final rites will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Wesley Chapel AME Church. The Rev. William Lawton will be in charge of the service.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Pallbearers were David Monroe, Eugene Ward, Lawrence Lewis, Clem Penelton, George Penelton and Bill Dean.
