Mrs. Elizabeth McCoy Bird.
"Aunt Betty" Bird, whose death occurred at her home, near Hightown, on last Friday morning at 5 o'clock, was the cause of much sorrow in all parts of the county, for she was well known by many and loved by all who knew her. In her neighborhood she will be missed, for she was to those around her a neighbor and friend indeed, kind and generous. The church with which she had been connected for so many years, and which she loved, will miss her, for she lived to do her Master's work, and gave aid to all causes for its furtherance. Mrs Bird was 78 years of age and was the wife of John Bird who died many years ago. She leaves no children, and of her own family surviving her is but one sister, Mrs.
Martha Eagle of Doe Hill. On Saturday the remains were
interred at Hiner's Mill, the old homestead, near Doe Hill, the funeral service being conducted by her pastor, Rey J. R. Tillery.
From Hiner Family Bible
John Bird of Highland County & Elizabeth McCoy Hiner of Pendleton County, were married by the Rev. John S. Pullin on Thursday the 26th of July, 1860.
Twin sibling of William Hiner
Highland Recorder September 16, 1938
Portion of a column about John Bird and the Hiner family.
By the way, that vacation from teaching between 1856 and 1866 might be accounted for, partially at least, by the long and frequent horseback rides John Bird was taking in those years between Hightown and Doe Hill in a seven-year siege to win the hand of the lady who became his second wife. Ask Mr. Luther Beverage, or Mr. Cameron Hansel to tell you about "Aunt Bettie Bird".
