Motion Picture Pioneer. British-born film director, producer, writer, and actor of the silent era. Present at the advent of motion pictures, with credits dating as far back as 1896. Co-founded Vitagraph Studios with Albert E. Smith In 1897; Vitagraph was bought by Warner Bros. Pictures in 1925. Married to actress Evangeline Russell. He was killed in a road accident in 1941.
