Margaretha along with her husband, Henry, and their children emigrated to America and landed in New York in the spring of 1833. The destination of the party was Missouri, of which they had glowing accounts, but, upon their arrival in St. Louis, the cholera was raging, and Henry Abend and two of his children, Charles 13 and Elise 10, fell victim to the disease. The mother then brought the family to St. Clair county, Illinois and settled at Shiloh, where she had friends. Mrs. Abend later moved to Belleville [reference: 1850 & 1860 census] where she lived until her death in 1865.
