Alex S. Abate Sr., 89 ROCKFORD - Alex S. Abate Sr., 89, of Rockford died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, in his home at Oakridge Manor Assisted Living Center, of Alzheimer's disease. Alex was born May 15, 1916, in Port Allen, La. The eldest son of Cologero "Alex" and Angelina (Solito) Abate. Moved to Rockford in 1918 from Louisiana. Alex married the former Anna Marie Gulotta on June 4, 1945, in St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rockford. Alex was employed as an assembler at Rockford Clutch for 35 years. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and past president of St. Anthony Senior Holy Name Society, and past building and Grounds Committee chairman. He was also member of the UAW. He had three sons, Alex M. Abate (Lisa) of Rockford, Anthony Abate (Patricia) of Sarasota, Fla., and Michael Abate (Mary Ann) of Roscoe. Grandchildren include, Jennifer Anne (Jeremy) O'Dell, Austin, Texas, Alex D. Abate of Chicago, Joseph Abate of Rockford, Elizabeth (Greg) Mascolo of Minnesota, Michael Patrick Abate of Baltimore, Md., and Tina Abate and Cassandra Abate, both of Sarasota, Fla. Also survived by brother, Carl Abate (Evelyn) of Rockford; three sisters, Bertha Colomne of Rockford, Pearl Spinello of Kansas City, Mo., and Lena Anderson of Arizona; brother-in-law and sister-in law, Joseph and Marilynn Gulotta; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren. Predeceased by his wife, Anna; brothers Joseph and Vito; sister, Mamie Hachez; brothers-in-law Sam Colmone and Rufus "Mac" McDaniel; and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Gulotta and Jackie Abate. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, in Gasparini & Oliveri Funeral Home, 707 Marchesano Drive. Visitation also from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1005 Ferguson St., Rockford, IL 61102. Service will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday after the morning visitation, with the Franciscan Friars officiating. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials will be established at a later date. The family of Alex would especially like to thank Joseph and Marilynn Gulotta, Peter and Maria Paris, and the girls at Oakridge Manor: Kim, Margaret, Julie, April, Heather, Shantara, Denise, Stacy, Christian, Terie, Greta and Dominique, for their never-ending help, support and love of our father.
