The only child of John C. Brady and Sarah Anna "Annie" Bass, Hazel lived with her mother and half-siblings in Missouri. Her maternal grandmother also lived with the family for a time.

Hazel married William Allen O'Neal on 07 Nov 1936 in Grafton, Jersey County, Illinois. They were the parents of 7 children, and eventually moved to Godfrey, Illinois.

She was a homemaker and worked at Beverly Farm for 8 years. William was employed at the Owens-Illinois Glass Company in the shipping department for 18 years.

William died in 1973 at the age of 58.

As her health declined during a long illness, Hazel became a patient at Eldercare Nursing Home. She was then hospitalized at Alton Memorial Hospital where she died at the age of 58 years, 8 months and 19 days.

She was survived by 3 daughters; 3 sons; 9 grandchildren; and 2 half-brothers, Earl Bryant of Roxana, Illinois, and Amos Bryant of Buffalo, Missouri.

In addition to her husband, Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; 1 son, Danny O'Neal; 1 half-sister, Frances Gorman; and 1 grandchild.

No visitation was held. A funeral Mass was conducted at 9 a.m. on the morning of 19 May 1978 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Slaten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Hazel was buried next to her husband, William, who passed away in 1973.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Hazel and William's oldest child, Pat, joined the Alton Fire Department in 1961. He was rose through the ranks to assistant chief. He was also employed by the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office and was recognized for his arson investigation skills and high achievement.

In 1987, after both Hazel and William had died, Pat became chief of the Richmond Heights Fire Department in St. Louis County, Missouri. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Pat died of recurrent renal cancer in 2001.
