Albert John Thiry, 73, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.
Mr. Thiry was born in Monessen, PA, on November 18, 1940, son of the late Joseph Thiry and Barbara Flesch Thiry. He was preceded in death by siblings, Eva Zippay, Marie Simonsen, Frank Thiry and Anthony Thiry.
Mr. Thiry played basketball on scholarship in 1961 with Wilmington College (now UNC-Wilmington). He also enjoyed racquetball, was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and had served in the National Guard. He retired from General Electric Nuclear Division in Wilmington, NC after thirty-three years of employment. Mr. Thiry was affectionately referred to as "Pop-Pop" by his grandchildren whom he loved so very much.
Surviving are his wife of fifty years, Nancy Reeves Thiry; two sons, Craig C. Thiry and wife Kristie and their children, Corey and Kaylin, and Brad S. Thiry and wife Becky, and their children Brianna and Brooke, all of Wilmington; a brother-in-law, Scott Reeves (Connie), a sister-in-law, Barbara Behrendt (Bill), a sister-in-law, Jeri Reeves; a brother-in-law, Fred Simonsen; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 South College Road, Wilmington, NC. The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 1:00 p.m. Saturday until the service hour. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, Wilmington, NC.
