Adam was born 7 Jan 1845 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania to Andrew Jackson Murphy and Catherine Kelly. He was one of ten children (his father’s 3rd child and his mother’s 1st). He enlisted on 4 Aug 1862 as Private, enlisted in Company G, Pennsylvania 148th Infantry Regiment on 18 Aug 1862, and mustered out on 01 Jun 1865 in Alexandria, VA. Adam married Martha Patterson Smith on 13 Oct 1881 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. On 4 Jan 1883, their daughter Clara Iona Murphy was born in Pine Grove Mills, Centre, Pennsylvania. Clara was actually their only child. Clara had an illegitimate son, Andrew Robison “Reub” Murphy, on 14 Mar 1906 in Grampian, Pennsylvania with John F Rafferty. I’m sure Adam & Martha were concerned for Clara’s future so they kept and raise Reuben as their own. Adam preceded his wife in death at the age of 82 on 1 Jul 1927 in Curwensville, Pennsylvania and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Curwensville, Pennsylvania.

Adam’s death certificate reflects his date of birth as 7 Jan 1845 (given by grandson Harvard Murphy) which seems supported by the 1900 census reflecting Jan 1845. I’m not sure where the date 24 Feb 1845, given by Reuben when he ordered the headstone, came from. I’ll attach the documents I have to Adam’s memorial page.
