He died in an accident at Normanby

Alexander Peebles, a resident for some time in the district, and whose name will be remembered in connection with the sad shooting accident at Normanby Sports two years ago, was this (Saturday) morning admitted into the Hawera Hospital, suffering from severe injuries, resulting from a dray accident. It appears that he was in charge of a bullock dray, carting a load of iron rails, and last evening was found on the road, a wheel of the dray having evidently passed over his leg. Dr Westenra was sent for, and attended to him for the time being, ordering his removal to the hospital as soon as possible. It is understood that the lower end of the thigh bone is crushed, and hopes are small of saving the leg. Further particulars as to how the accident happened are not yet available, no one having seen it, and Peebles being too weak to give much information.

Alexander Peebles, who was found on Saturday lying on the Normanby Road, with one of his legs badly crushed above the knee, through a bullock-dray laden with iron having passed over him, and who was brought to the hospital, died in the afternoon. From the first, it was doubtful if the sufferer would come successfully through the operation of amputation, which was found to be necessary. The deceased was a resident of Eltham, and leaves a wife and several children
