A sad accident, terminating fatally, occurred at the Normanby sports meeting on Wednesday. There was a shooting gallery on the ground, in charge of Thomas Gilroy, of Hawera, and it appears that a boy, whose name is Alex. Walter Peebles, and whose parents reside at Eltham, was standing close to Gilroy, who had just loaded a small rifle, when by some means the weapon exploded, the pellet entering the boy's stomach. It was at once seen that the little lad was seriously injured, and a messenger was despatched to Hawera for a doctor, the boy being carried to the Commercial Hotel. Meanwhile Mr G. Ayre had communicated by telephone with Dr Westenra, who ordered the sufferer to be brought to the Hawera hospital. Constable Whitehouse procured a cab and used every means to make the journey as easy as possible, and the boy was taken away. Nearing Hawera the unfortunate lad breathed his last, not having regained consciousness, an hour or so after the accident. Thomas Gilroy was afterwards arrested by Constable Whitehouse, and brought to Hawera and lodged in the lock-up, bail being refused. Alex Walter Peebles, the deceased, was about fifteen years of age, and left home in the morning, in company with a younger brother, for the purpose of going to the sports. It was reported that the mother of the boys (who is in a weak state of health) was avers to their going, having a presentiment that something would happen. The melancholy occurrence cast quite a gloom over the gathering at Normanby, and wide-spread sympathy is expressed for the parents. Gilroy, who owns the gallery, is well-known in Hawera as a labouring man. He met with an accident some time ago, undergoing an operation recently, and is hardly fitted for rough work. As a means of getting a livelihood, he purchased the gallery only as late as Saturday, with the lamentable issue already recorded.
