Mary Ann Leist was born August 1, 1834, in Washington Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, daughter of David A. and Mary Elizabeth Neff Leist. On October 3, 1848, in Pickaway County, she became the first wife of George Washington Valentine, son of Joshua and Margaret Drum Valentine. They were the parents of 7 children: Mary Ellen, Samantha, Elmira, Rosetta E., Malinda, Susan Arminda and Solomon Lindsey Valentine. The family moved to Henry County, Ohio, where Mary Ann passed away May 7, 1859, not having reached her 25th birthday. She was buried in Liberty Chapel Cemetery, Liberty Township, Henry County, Ohio.
