WILLIAM C. MAERTZ (d. 1926)

W.C. Maertz Passes Away At Reedsville
FIRST COUNTY TAX HEAD DIES AT NOON TODAY
Former County Board Chairman and Prominent in Co. Politics
William C. Maertz, first county assessment and tax supervisor of Manitowoc county when the position was created by the legislature, a lifelong resident of the county and for several years chairman of the county board, died at his home at Reedsville at noon today.
Mr. Maertz had long been prominent in business circles and politics in the county and was widely known.
The death of Mr. Maertz was due to a complication of diseases from which he had been a sufferer for years. He had been critically ill only since Sunday. The funeral will probably be held Sunday from the family home.

A Native of County
Born September 15, 1857, in the town of Maple Grove, Mr. Maertz, who was past 68 years of age, had always made his home in this county, receiving his early education in rural schools. Forty-seven years ago, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Zimmerman and the couple took up their home at Reedsville where Mr. Maertz engaged in business. Ten children were born to the couple, nine of whom, with the widow, survive him. One of the children died five years ago.
Soon after reaching his majority, Mr. Maertz began to take an active part in community affairs and for many years, represented his district on the county board of which body he served as chairman for a number of terms a quarter of a century ago.

Was Village President
He also served as village president and held many other positions of trust including that of secretary of the Rockland Mutual Fire Insurance company, a place which he filled for twenty-six years, resigning a few months ago when his health would no longer permit him to discharge the duties of the office.

Surviving Family
The surviving children are Fred, W.W. and Otto H. Maertz, all making their homes at Reedsville; Mrs. August Fokett, Mrs. Henry Bloedorn, Mrs. Charles Behnke, and Helen, all of Reedsville; Mrs. Walter Lemke of Wayside.
(One surviving child not listed). Two brothers, August of Antigo and Herman of the Town of Maple Grove and two sisters, Mrs. William Hindt of Brillion and Mrs. August Zimmerman, Reedsville, also survive him.
