Margaret was the first born child of Martin Reed and Fannie Emeline Towns, who married on 9 Apr 1848 in Marshall County Indiana. I found seven siblings for her--Charles Warren (b.1851), Albert Maxwell (b.1852), Elijah Martin (b.1854), Olive (b.1856), Richard (b.1858), William Henry Harrison (b.1860) and Rose (b.1861).

Margaret first appeared with her family on the 1850 Census, living in Plymouth (mistakenly noted as "My Division"), Marshall County, Indiana. Martin, aged 25, was farming for a living. Fannie, enumerated as Emeline, aged 23 was home with 1-year-old Margaret, who was born in Indiana.

In the decade that followed, this family was on the move. After welcoming Charles and Albert to the family in 1851 and 1853, they moved to Illinois were Elijah was born in 1855. Sometime before Richard's birth in 1856, they moved to Iowa, were Richard, Olive and Martin were born. I found them on the 1860 Census, living in Mount Vernon, Black Hawk County, Iowa, near Cedar Falls. Martin, aged 34 was working a new farm. Fannie would have had her hands full taking care of a house, a husband, and seven children ranging in age from eleven down to three months. Another would soon be on the way.

The family moved back to Indiana right after that census was taken. Daughter Rose joined the family there in 1861. I found Margaret's parents and siblings on the 1870 Census, living in Bourbon, Marshall County, Indiana.

Margaret was not with the family because on 26 Aug 1865, she married first husband Wayne Jordan in Marshall County, Indiana. The first of their eight children arrived the following year, a son named Ancil, born in 1866. The three of them appeared together on the 1870 Census, living in Walnut Township (Argos P.O.), Marshall County, where Wayne, aged 25, was farming for a living. Maggie, aged 21, was home with 4-year-old Ancil.

In the decade that followed, Margaret and Wayne welcomed son Charles in 1873, and daughter Trella Mae on 20 Sep 1876. They also had a daughter named Cora that died on 5 Aug 1875, age unknown. Their family of five appeared on the 1880 Census, living in Tippecanoe, Marshall County. Wayne was still busy farming. Maggie, aged 30, was home with their three children--Ancil, aged 14, Charles, aged 7, and Trella, aged 4. The enumeration took place in Tippecanoe on 21 Jun 1880 and daughter Carrie H. was born on 21 Apr 1880. It is unclear why she didn't show up on that record. At any rate, join the family she did. Daughters Emma and Pearl followed in 1882 and 1883. An eighth child came along at some point but died in its infancy.

In the twenty-year gap until the next available census, Wayne and Margaret's nest began to empty. Son Ancil married Bertha E. Payne on 24 Dec 1890 in Marshall County. Eight years later he married Lena Conaroe on 23 Jan 1898 in Henry County, Indiana. I found a possible marriage for son Charles on 11 Nov 1896 in Kosciusco County to Jessie Brenneman.

I was able to check back up on the family in 1900. Wayne and Maggie had moved the family to Franklin, Kosciusko County, Indiana. Wayne, aged 59, was a teamster. Maggie, aged 51 reported that six of her eight children had survived to that census. Still at home with their parents were Trella Mae, aged 23, Carrie, aged 20, Emma, aged 18, and Pearl, aged 17.

Three years after that census, Wayne, Maggie's husband of 38 years, died on 7 Nov 1903 at age 58.

Maggie mourned his loss for just over three years before deciding to marry for a second time. On 20 Dec 1906, she married John Phend, the son of Jacob Phend and Louisa Fisher. Both were 57 years old.

Maggie's daughter Carrie married Robert Newton Towns on Christmas day in 1909. (The Towns surname begs the question of how Robert might have been related to Carrie's grandmother Fannie Towns.) The following year, Trella Mae exchanged vows with Harvey E. Holderman on 17 Sep 1910 in Warsaw, Indiana.

Margaret, aged 62, appeared on the 1910 Census, living in Etna, Kosciusko County, Indiana with second-husband John Phend, also aged 62. He was a farmer. Margaret again reported that six of her eight children were still alive. With the couple was 2-year-old Bertha Holderman, identified as a "boarder". This was Trella Mae's future step-daughter, the child of husband Harvey Holderman, staying with her grandparents-to-be. Trella was living in Union Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, working as a nurse in a hospital and boarding with Dr. Frederick Ferguson and his wife Lillian.

In 1920, Trella and Harvey were living in Tippecanoe, Marshall County with three children--Gertrude, aged 14, Berta, aged 12, and John F., aged 10. John was likely Trella's child. That same census year, Margaret, aged 71, and John, aged 72, were also living in Tippecanoe, Marshall, Indiana. Also living in the home was 48-year-old laborer Albert Schrum.

Margaret died four years after that census on 7 Aug 1924 at age 75. She was laid to rest next to first husband Wayne.

Margaret's daughters Trella and Carrie were both widowed by 1930 and were living together in Tippecanoe. Carrie too had become a nurse. With the sisters was Carrie's younger son Carleton Towns, aged 17 and working as a house painter. Carrie also had an older son name Wendell, born in 1904. Trella and Carrie were still together in 1940, living in Newcastle, Fulton County, Indiana.
