The son of David "Walter" Banfield and Ruby Slaten, Wilbur graduated from Grafton High School in Grafton, Jersey County, Illinois. He then joined the United States Army and served in the European Theater during World War II.

After the war, Wilbur married Vera Lucille McCann on 09 Aug 1948 at the United Methodist Church in Grafton. They did not have any children.

He was employed in the storeroom of Owens-Illinois' machine shop.

Wilbur was a member of the Grafton American Legion. He also belonged to Alton VFW Post 1308.

His was an animal lover and a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs. He made sure to attend at least 1 game every year at Wrigley Field.

Wilbur died at St. Anthony's Hospital at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 3 days.

He was survived by 1 sister, Ruth Presley of Grafton; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his mother and father, Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; 3 sisters, Etta Ketchem, Agnes Daniels and Lorena Dobson; and 1 brother, Francis Banfield.

Visitation was held on 05 Oct 2006 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services were conducted there at 10 a.m. the following morning.

Wilbur was buried next to his wife, Vera, who passed away in 1978.
