In 1920 at age 5, his father died. They were living at 605 West 44th St. in Savannah, next door to his mother's sister, Mattie Brunson. In 1939, mother Maggie, Earl, sister Ernestine & her daughter, Betty Bennett and Anna Mae "Ann" were all living at 515 NW 50th St. in Miami, FL. On December 25, 1939, his mother, Maggie, gave him a bible for Christmas which eventually was passed on to his niece, Betty.
Earl Bland died on Feb 24, 1943, at age 28, in Miami, Dade County, FL. The funeral service was held at Combs Funeral Chapel on Feb. 26th, 1943, Friday at 3:30 p.m. Rev. Paul O. Elder, officiated. Casket Bearers were Earnest Coxe, Foy C. Adams, W. W. Watkins, Gene Barrette, Leon P. Joiner and Theodore Kendricks. Family remaining included his mother, Mrs. Maggie Bland, sisters Ernestine & Ann Bland, niece Betty Jane Bennett and Mrs. C.P. Pierce.
Many years later, niece Betty (Bennett) Semple remembered as a girl that she loved the backyard in Miami and that there were towels in a chair for Earl used for heart therapy as he was in poor health.
