Utie Adeline Pittinger, 92, of Emmitsburg, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at St. Joseph's Ministries, Emmitsburg, after an extended illness. Born September 11, 1921 in Johnsville, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mollie Beard Brown. She was the wife of Daniel Webster Pittinger, who predeceased her in 1995. Mrs. Pittinger and her husband worked at Castle Farm for years. She was formerly employed as a pie, cake and fruit crisp baker for Mountain Gate Restaurant. She was a member of Grace Rocky Hill Lutheran Church, Woodsboro. She enjoyed sewing, latch hook, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are two daughters, Sandy Shriver and husband Norman of Emmitsburg, Sheila Pittinger and companion, Allen Strausbaugh of Emmitsburg; sons, Larry W. Pittinger and wife Shirley of Mountaindale, Dennis D. Pittinger of Woodsboro and Mike C. Pittinger and wife Mary of Walkersville; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister, Bessie Young of Woodsboro. She was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon Keyton in 1991; granddaughter, Pam Shriver in 2007; grandson, Dennis Michael Pittinger in 2010; sisters, Belva Barton, Catherine Brown and Hallie Hummer; and brothers, Arthur, Donald, George and Russell Brown and Wilmer Beard. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro. Rev. Ann Schlossnagle, her pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Rocky Hill Cemetery. Pall bearers will be David and Jacob Shriver, Scott Maly, Robbie Norwood, Daniel Pittinger and Kenny Harner. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Ministries, 331 S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
