Bull Half White (Ashishishe, which means "The Crow"), or, "Curley", Crow Indian, was the son of Strong Bear and Strikes The Water, both born in Montana. He married Bird Woman, divorcing her in 1886. He remarried Takes The Shield, with whom he had one daughter, Awakuk Korita ha Sakush (Bird Of Another Year), who took the English name Nora.

Bull Half White enlisted on 10 April 1876 as a scout for the famed and ill-fated 7th U.S. Cavalry under LTC. George Armstrong Custer. He was one of several Crow scouts who accompanied the 7th Cavalry on the expedition that would annihilate 5 of the 7 cavalry companies Custer commanded at The Battle of the Little Big Horn.

Before the battle, Custer is believed to have released his Indian scouts, who changed into their native dress. Bull Half White reported that he did not take part in the Battle, although writers would embellish Bull Half White's story, putting him in the thick of it, managing an escape. Bull Half White wearied of fighting the myths over the years and stopped his denials.

Bull Half White reported that he watched the battle from some distance on a hilltop. After he witnessed the complete extermination of Custer's detachment, he left to report the defeat. Bull Half White found an Army supply boat, and through drawings and sign language managed to make himself understood. His report was the first to alert the Army of the horrendous slaughter.

Bull Half White spent the rest of his life on the Crow Reservation, which had been moved to an area close to the scene of the battle on the banks of the Little Big Horn River. He served with the Crow Police. For his service, finally in 1920 Bull Half White received an Army pension. Some sources note his death in 1923 as having been from pneumonia, but his death certificate states that his cause of death was stomach cancer.
