Augustus Butler (1882-1957) was the oldest child of Benjamin F. Butler (1848-1923) and Lucinda Pratt Butler (1862-1942,) who had married circa 1880.

Augustus was born in Pontiac, Michigan and baptized (christened) in Oakland, Michigan.

The 1900 U.S. Census shows the family (Mr. and Mrs. Butler, Augustus, and a 14 year-old brother whose name is illegible) living in Sand Point, Idaho, where the family owned and ran a boarding house that was home to 25 Japanese immigrants (all in their late-teens to late-thirties.

By the time of the 1910 U.S. Census Augustus had moved to Elmira, Bonner County, Idaho where he lived alone on a farm that he owned free and clear. (His father, Benjamin Butler had also moved to Elmira before 1910 and owned a nearby farm (or, perhaps the two men owned a farm together. Mrs. Lucinda Butler was not included in her husband's 1910 U.S. Census and I could not find her elsewhere.)

Augustus Butler and Susan J. "Susie" Tilton (1891-1973) married in Bonner County on December 12, 1912. It appears that the couple did not have any children.

By the time he registered for the draft in 1917 Augustus had moved to Spokane, Washington, where he seems to have lived the rest of his life. In 1917 he lived on East Second Avenue in Spokane, Washington and was employed as a laborer at Sperry Mill. (His draft card listed his mother Lucinda, of 504 East Montgomery in Spokane, as his nearest relative. Their 1920 US Census enumerations shows that both Mr. and Mrs. Butler had moved to Spokane City, where Mr. Butler seems to have been retired.)

As of the 1920 U.S. Census Augustus and Susie owned the East Second Avenue house free and clear; he worked as a carpenter's helper and she worked as a laundry folder. By the 1930 U.S. Census Susie's widowed mother, Alice M. Tilton, had moved in with the couple and Augustus was employed as a carpenter in the building trade. By the 1940 US Census the household, which no longer included Mrs. Tilton but did include the widowed Lucinda Butler, had moved to an $1,800 house at 1807 East Pacific which Augustus owned. He worked as a laborer on a W.P.A. project. When he registered for the draft in 1942 Augustus was employed by the Aluminum Company of America.
