Obituary states that he was moved to Champaign IL for burial with his first wife, Susan Bailey. We are surveying the cemeteries there in hopes of determining the yard where they are interred. His marriage license to Sue Bailey issued 19 June 1872.

NOTE: He is the NEPHEW of another Stokley Slayden.

Mr S. W. Slayden, president of the Central Bank and secretary of the Slayden-Kirksey Woolen Mills of Waco Texas, vice-president of the Dallas Cotton Mills and Manchester Cotton Mills of Fort Worth, Texas He was born in Graves County Ky, July 1839, His father, Mr T. A. Slayden, was born in Virginia in 1819,and moved to Kentucky in 1830 and was a merchant and planter. Mr T. A. Slayden married Letitia Ellison Beadles, also of VA, daughter of William G Beadles. S. W. was the second of their children. He studied law under the celebrated practitioner, Edward Crossland, admitted when 19 at Mayfield, Graves co Ky, 1858, enlisted in Co C, 1st KY Inf commanded by Col Blanton Duncan. In 1869 he went to New Orleans and formed a law partnership with Mr Kerr. In 1874 he acquired an interest in the coal mines near St Joseph Mo, and moved there. After a residence of four years at St Joe, he moved to St Louis Mo, and in 1882 from that city to Waco TX. He was married June 19, 1872 to Miss Susan A Bailey, daughter of Mr. David Bailey of Champaign Ill. She died in Waco in 1886 and one child of two still living, Bailey Slayden. November 12th 1891, he married Mrs Emma C Whitsitt, widow of Mr. R. E. Whitsitt of Denver Colorado. This marriage is recorded in Manhattan, New York.

Lawsuits in the Texas Supreme Court Reporter and the Southwestern Reported indicate that he and his son Thomas Bailey were in the business of buying and discounting real estate notes.

S. W. Slayden, Brother of Congressman, Dies
Born in Kentucky, Southern Veteran Lived in Mexico
S. W. Slayden eldest brother of Congressman James L. Slayden, died here this morning at 7 o'clock. Mr. Slayden was born in southern Kentucky, July 21, 1839, being just short of seventy-seven years of age. He enlisted in the Confederate army In April, 1861 and served in the Virginia campaign.
He formerly resided in Waco and later in Monterey, Mexico, where he had business. The revolutions in Mexico have prevented the prosecution of his business enterprises for some time, and he had been making his home in this city. Mr. Slayden was a widower, his wife and children having died several years ago.
Funeral services will be held at the residence, 2017 0 street northwest, at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning. The remains will be interred at Champaign, Ill,. where his wife is buried.
Surviving him are two brothers,W J Slayden,
of Asheville, N. C., and Congressman James L. Slayden of San Antonio, Tex.; two sisters, Mrs. B. R. Fakes, and Miss Rena Slayden, of Asheville. N.C.
