John Chamberlin was born in England in 1626 and died of Small Pox in Newport, Rhode Island, April 1666. He was the son of Henry Chamberlin, blacksmith, and his wife Jane. The couple had five children besides John, all born in England: Susanna 1616, Henry, 1619, Wm. 1623, Ursula, 1632, Faith, 1634. The Chamberlins arrived in Massachusetts and settled in Hingham in 1637, when John was 9 years old. After serving a 7 year apprenticeship, probably in Boston, John was an accomplished currier, a specialist in finishing leather, dying it and making it strong, flexible and waterproof.

John married first, Anne Browne, daughter of Wm. Brown, in Boston, 19 May 1653. Anne was probably born about 1628 in England, and died abt. 1662 in Boston. The couple had the following children:
1.) Anna, b. 6 February 1653/4, Boston, Suffolk Co., MA. died young.
2.) John Jr., b. 1 May 1655, Boston; served in King Philip's War, 1676; died of small pox 28 March 1679 at Hingham, MA,age 24, unmarried.
3.) Elizabeth, b. 25 October 1656, Boston. died young
4.) Henry, b. 3 February 1658, Boston. Married Ann West, 20 March 1680. Died abt. January/February 1688, Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., New Jersey.
5.) William, b. 1661, Boston; possibly raised by relatives in Sandwich
MA; removed to Monmouth Co., New Jersey with his brother Henry in 1680; married Mary Rawlins,Died before 28 May 1717, Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., New Jersey.

John Chamberlin married second: Catherine Chatham, Quaker, in 1663,probably in Newport, Rhode island, but possibly in Boston. The couple had the following children:
1.) Susanna, b. August 1664, Newport, Newport Co., RI. apparently died young.
2.) Peleg, b. August 1666, Newport. Married Susanna-----, and lived most or all of his life in Rhode Island. Died after 1722.
3.) Jane, born December 1667.

John Chamberlin was an early American Quaker. After witnessing the persecution of Quakers and the execution of two of their missionaries, John became sympathetic to their cause. He visited imprisoned Quakers, attended Quaker meetings, and joined them in their mission to bring the new faith to Massachusetts. He soon tasted the cruelty of the Quakers' Puritan oppressors. He was arrested, imprisoned and three times tied to the back of a cart and whipped through Boston, Roxbury and Denham, but he remained a steadfast Witness for the Lord's word. Each beating made him stronger in his faith, a faith that carried him through his sufferings with cheerfulness. His wife, Anne Brown, father, Henry, and brother, William, though they were not Quakers themselves, supported John in his suffering, and would not abandon him. He was finally released from prison in November of 1661. His wife Anne died in Boston soon thereafter, and John removed to Newport, Rhode Island, a well known haven for Quakers.

John married Catherine Chatham, in 1663. Catherine was a dedicated and outspoken Quaker who, like John, had been whipped and imprisoned in Boston and banished. She came to Boston from London in about 1659, answering the Lord's will, and dressed in sackcloth and ashes as a sign of the Lord's displeasure with Massachusetts Puritans, created dramatic and provocative disturbances. After their marriage and removal to Newport, the couple seem to have resumed more settled lives, he as a currier, and she as a wife and mother.
