Lee was 45 years old and had worked in the coal mining industry for 28 of those years. At the time of his death Lee was employed by the Pond Creek Pocahontas Coal Company in Bartley, WV. He worked as a Section Foreman in the Bartley No. 1 mine. He and 91 other men died when the mine exploded on January 10, 1940. Harry's name appears on the left-side of the Bartley No. 1 memorial.
